About Us

Deframed Media is a joint project of the AI experts from Oraios AI (Dr. Dominik Jain and Michael Panchenko) and the social scientist Dr. Anil K. Jain.

We look at online articles from both high-reach mainstream media and so-called ‘alternative media’ and analyse which framing and manipulation techniques can be found in the articles (deframing). We also want to show – somewhat less seriously – that other perspectives/viewpoints on the topics covered also exist (reframings).

To this end, we apply the latest AI technologies. All deframings and reframings are created completely automatically using artificial intelligence. We not only want to showcase the capabilities of these technologies (which are frequently astounding), but to demonstrate that they can be used not only for propaganda, censorship and control, but also for the exact opposite: critical analysis and the scrutiny of manipulative narratives. We believe this is important, as we are observing an increasing tendency towards one-sided portrayals and the devaluation of views that do not correspond to one's own – in the media and elsewhere.

The use of AI makes it possible to carry out critical analyses of media articles in a timely manner and in potentially large numbers, covering a high degree of breadth. However, we would like to stress that the results of these analyses should not be taken too seriously. AI analyses can be flawed and may contain hallucinations. Most importantly, the large language models themselves are induced from training data that is anything but ‘objective’ and balanced. Our deframings should, therefore, not be taken uncritically. Ultimately, no AI can replace the reader's own critical mind. True to our motto ‘artificial stupidity for natural intelligence’, we do not want to be an authority on truth or even a media watchdog, but merely a stimulus to critically analyse media content and encourage people to take a different perspective. This can and should be fun! This is why the alternative perspectives of the reframings in particular are deliberately ‘caricature-like’. However, even seemingly exaggerated arguments often contain a grain of ‘truth’ and bear the potential for reflective (self-)realisation.

What we definitely cannot and do not want to do, however, is to provide a complete overview of the media at large. We can only cast a limited spotlight on a highly diverse and diffuse media landscape. And our offering is, therefore, selectively (and systematically) distorted. The mainstream media are deliberately overrepresented, as they have a greater reach and many people tend to be less critical of their content. The same applies to deframed.media: You can only get out what you put in. The results of the analyses are strongly determined by the analysis questions. Importantly, all distortions that are based on structural moments (such as general reporting tendencies due to the reproduction mechanisms of the media system, economic interests, etc.) necessarily fall by the wayside. Therefore, deframed.media can only hope to make a small contribution towards more ‘enlightened’ and reflexive media reception.

There are no conflicts of interest. deframed.media is not financially supported by third parties and does not pursue a political agenda.
